Установка Linux Ubuntu на виртуальную машину

Такой подход к инсталляции поможет в удобной форме протестировать интересующую вас систему, исключив ряд сложных манипуляций, в числе которых необходимость переустановки основной ОС и разметки диска.

Этап 1: Подготовка к установке

  1. Для начала запустите VirtualBox. Кликните на кнопку «Создать».

Вы видите перед собой окно, в котором следует указать, какой объем оперативной памяти компьютера вы готовы выделить для нужд виртуальной машины. Значение можно изменить при помощи ползунка или в окне справа. Зеленым выделена область значений, которые более предпочтительны для выбора. После проведения манипуляций нажмите «Next».

Программа предложит вам определиться, в каком месте будет располагаться хранилище данных новой операционной системы. Рекомендуется выделить под это 10 гигабайт. Для таких ОС как Linux, этого более, чем достаточно. Оставьте выбор по умолчанию. Жмите «Создать».

Сделайте свой выбор или оставьте вариант по умолчанию. Кликните «Next».

Определитесь с форматом хранения. Если у вас очень много свободного пространства на жестком диске компьютера, смело выбирайте «Динамический», но помните, что вам будет сложно контролировать процесс распределения места в будущем. В случае, если вы хотите точно знать, какой объем памяти у вас займет виртуальная машина и не желаете, чтобы этот показатель менялся, кликайте на «Фиксированный». Нажмите кнопку «Next».

Укажите имя и размер виртуального жесткого диска. Можете оставить значение по умолчанию. Жмите кнопку «Создать».

Программе потребуется время для создания жесткого диска. Дождитесь окончания процесса.

Этап 2: Работа c образом диска

  1. В окне появится информация о том, что вы только что создали. Ознакомьтесь с отображаемыми на экране данными, они должны совпадать с ранее введенными. Для продолжения работы нажмите на кнопку «Запустить».

VirtualBox попросит выбрать диск, на котором находится Ubuntu. При помощи любого из известных эмуляторов, например UltraISO, смонтируйте образ.

Для того, чтобы монтировать дистрибутив в виртуальный привод, откройте его в UltraISO и нажмите кнопку «Монтировать».

В открывшемся небольшом окне нажмите «Монтировать».

Откройте «Мой компьютер» и удостоверьтесь, что диск смонтирован. Запомните, под какой буквой он отображается.

Выберите букву диска и жмите «Продолжить».

Этап 3: Установка

  1. Установщик Ubuntu запущен. Подождите, пока загрузятся необходимые данные.

Выберите язык из списка в левой части окна. Нажмите «Установить Ubuntu».

Определитесь, хотите ли вы, чтобы обновления устанавливались в процессе установки либо со сторонних носителей. Нажмите «Продолжить».

Так как на только что созданном виртуальном жестком диске нет информации, выберите первый пункт, кликните «Продолжить».

Установщик Linux предостерегает вас от ошибочных действий. Ознакомьтесь с представленной вам информацией и смело жмите «Продолжить».

Укажите ваше место пребывания и нажмите «Продолжить». Таким образом установщик определит, в каком часовом поясе вы находитесь и сможет правильно настроить время.

Выберите язык и раскладку клавиатуры. продолжите установку.

Заполните все поля, что видите на экране. Выберите, хотите ли вы вводить пароль при входе, или же вход будет осуществляться автоматически. Нажмите кнопку «Продолжить».

Дождитесь окончания установки. Она может занять несколько минут. В процессе на экране будет появляться интересная, полезная информация об устанавливаемой ОС. Можете ознакомиться с ней.

Этап 4: Ознакомление с операционной системой

  1. После окончания установки перезапустите виртуальную машину.

После перезапуска будет загружена Linux Ubuntu.

Ознакомьтесь с рабочим столом и возможностями ОС.

На самом деле, установить Ubuntu на виртуальную машину не так уж сложно. Для этого не нужно быть опытным пользователем. Достаточно лишь внимательно читать инструкции в процессе установки, и все получится!

What is VirtualBox?

VirtualBox is a free and open source, cross-platform, software for creating, running and managing virtual machines on your system. VirtualBox was originally created by Innotek GmbH and released in 2007. The company was later purchased by Sun Microsystems. Oracle VM VirtualBox lets you create one or more VMs on a single physical server. Virtual Machines are computers that use the hardware components of the host computer, each running its own operating system. VB supports the installation of MS Windows, Linux, BDS, and MS-DOS on the installed VMs.

In this article, we will explain how you can install VirtualBox on your Ubuntu system through the UI and the command line.

We have run the commands and procedures mentioned in this article on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS system.

Installing VirtualBox Through Ubuntu Software Manager

For a person who does not want to open the Command Line much, installing a software present in the Ubuntu repository through the UI is very simple. On your Ubuntu desktop Activities toolbar, click the Ubuntu Software icon.

The Ubuntu Software manager will open in the following view:

Please click the search icon and enter VirtualBox in the search bar. The search results will list the VirtualBox entry as follows:

Click the VirtualBox entry from the search results. The following dialog will appear:

Then, click the Install button to begin the installation process. The following authentication dialog will display for you to provide the authentication details for a sudo user as only an authorized user can install a software on Ubuntu.

Enter your password and click the Authenticate button. After that, the installation process will begin, displaying a progress bar as follows.

VirtualBox will then be installed to your system and you will get the following message after a successful installation:

Through the above dialog, you can choose to directly launch VirtualBox and even Remove is immediately for whatever reason.

You can launch VirtualBox any time you want by entering ‘VirtualBox’ in Ubuntu Dash or access it from the Applications list.

VirtualBox will open in the following view; you can create and manage virtual machines through this tool:

Uninstall

You can uninstall VirtualBox through the Ubuntu Software manager by first searching for it through the Search button and then clicking the Remove button from the following view:

A dialog will ask you if you are sure about removing the software from your system. Please enter the Remove button to uninstall VirtualBox. An authentication dialog will display for you to provide the authentication details for a sudo user as only an authorized user can install a software on Ubuntu. Enter your password and click the Authenticate button. After that, the uninstall process will begin, removing VirtualBox from your system.

Installing VirtualBox Through the Command line

A Terminal-savvy person can choose to install VirtualBox through the command line as follows:

In order to install the latest VirtualBox, you need to have the Multiverse repository enabled on your system. By default this repository is disabled. Open your Ubuntu Terminal either through system Dash or the Ctrl+Alt+D shortcut. Then enter the following command as root in order to enable the repository and also update your system’s repository index with that on the internet:

You may be asked to provide the password for root after which the repository will be enabled on your system.

Now, enter the following command to install VirtualBox:

The system will prompt you with a Y/n option in order to begin the installation procedure. Please enter Y and hit Enter to begin. VirtualBox will then be installed on your system.

You can launch VirtualBox directly through the Terminal by entering the following command:

Exit the Terminal by entering the exit command:

Uninstall

In order to uninstall VirtualBox from your system without removing any configurations you might have made, enter the following command as sudo:

The system will prompt you with a Y/n option in order to begin the uninstall procedure. Please enter Y and hit Enter to begin. VirtualBox will then be removed from your system.

If you have made any configurations, such as installed an extension package, you can remove VirtualBox and all those by using the following command:

Install the Extension Package

You may also wish to install some additional features for your VirtualBox. An extension package can be installed and then configured in your VirtualBox for this purpose.

Enter the following command as sudo in order to install the Extension Package:

The following configuration message will appear, presenting the VirtualBox terms of the license:

Enter Ok and then select Yes from the following view if you agree to the terms:

No re-open the VirtualBox either through the command line or the UI.

Select Preferences from the File menu and then select the Extensions option from the left panel of the following Preferences view:

You will see the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension enabled on your VirtualBox. You can add and remove extension packages through this view by clicking the add and remove buttons.

If you want to uninstall the extension package through the command line, please enter the following command:

The system will prompt you with a Y/n option in order to begin the uninstall procedure. Please enter Y and hit Enter to begin. VirtualBox extension package will then be removed from your system.

By following the steps described in this article, you can learn to install and uninstall the latest version of VirtualBox on your Ubuntu system, both through the graphical user interface and the command line. You can also add further extension packages and use them with your VirtualBox installation with the help of this article.

Brief: Using Linux in a virtual machine gives you the option to try Linux within Windows. This step-by-step guide shows you how to install Linux inside Windows using VirtualBox.

There are several ways to install Linux. You can clean everything from your system and install Linux. You can dual boot Linux with Windows and choose one of the operating systems at the boot time. You can even install Linux within Windows from Microsoft Store (though this only provides you with the command line version of Linux).

But if you want to use Linux without making any changes to your Windows system, you can go the virtual machine route. Basically, you install and use Linux like any regular Windows application. When you just want to try Linux for limited use, virtual machines provide the most comfortable option.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to install Linux inside Windows using VirtualBox.

Installing Linux inside Windows using VirtualBox

VirtualBox is free and open source virtualization software from Oracle. It enables you to install other operating systems in virtual machines. It is recommended that your system should have at least 4GB of RAM to get decent performance from the virtual operating system.

Requirements

  • Good internet connection to download software and Linux ISO. (You can also use some other computer with an internet connection to download these files.)
  • Windows system with at least 12 GB of free space.
  • Windows system with 4GB of rRAM. (It can work with less RAM as well, but your system will start to lag while using Linux in the virtual machine.)

I am installing Ubuntu 17.10 in this tutorial, but the same steps apply to any other Linux distribution. If you prefer videos, you can watch the one below from our YouTube channel:

Step 1: Download and install VirtualBox

Go to the website of Oracle VirtualBox and get the latest stable version from here:

Installing VirtualBox is not rocket science. Just double-click on the downloaded .exe file and follow the instructions on the screen. It is like installing any regular software on Windows.

Step 2: Download the Linux ISO

Next, you need to download the ISO file of the Linux distribution. You can get this image from the official website of the Linux distribution you are trying to use.

I am using Ubuntu in this example, and you can download ISO images for Ubuntu from the link below:

Step 3: Install Linux using VirtualBox

You have installed VirtualBox and you have downloaded the ISO for Linux. You are now set to install Linux in VirtualBox.

Start VirtualBox, and click on the New symbol. Give the virtual OS a relevant name.

Allocate RAM to the virtual OS. My system has 8GB of RAM and I decided to allocate 2GB of it. You can use more RAM if your system has enough extra.

Create a virtual disk. This serves as the hard disk of the virtual Linux system. It is where the virtual system will store its files.

I recommend using the VDI file type here.

You can choose either the “Dynamically allocated” or the “Fixed size” option for creating the virtual hard disk.

The recommended size is 10 GB. However, I suggest giving it more space if possible. 15-20 GB is preferable.

Once everything is in place, it’s time to boot that ISO and install Linux as a virtual operating system.

If VirtualBox doesn’t detect the Linux ISO, browse to its location by clicking the folder icon as shown in the picture below:

Soon you’ll find yourself inside Linux. You should be presented with the option to install it.

Things from here are Ubuntu-specific. Other Linux distributions may have slightly different looking steps, but it won’t be complicated at all.

You can skip to Continue.

Select ‘Erase disk and install Ubuntu’. Don’t worry. It won’t delete anything on your Windows operating system. You are using the virtual disk space of 15-20GB that we created in previous steps. It won’t impact the real operating system.

Just click on Continue.

Things are pretty straightforward from here.

Try to choose a password that you can remember. You can also reset the password in Ubuntu if you forget it.

You are almost done. It may take 10-15 minutes to complete the installation.

Once the installation finishes, restart the virtual system.

If it gets stuck on the screen below, you may close the VirtualBox.

And that’s all. From now on, just click on the installed Linux virtual machine. You’ll be able to use it directly. The installation is a one time only process. You can even delete the Linux ISO that you downloaded earlier.

I strongly recommend using VirtualBox Guest Additions on Ubuntu for it provides better compatibility and you would be able to use copy-paste and drag-drop between Linux and Windows.

Troubleshooting: AMD-V is disabled in the BIOS

If you face this error while using the virtual machine:

Not in a hypervisor partition (HVP=0) (VERR_NEM_NOT_AVAILABLE).
AMD-V is disabled in the BIOS (or by the host OS) (VERR_SVM_DISABLED).

E_FAIL (0x80004005)

Interface:
IConsole

This means that virtualization is blocked on your system. You’ll have to activate it in your BIOS settings first.

Reboot your system and as soon as it powers up, press F2/F10/F12 to access BIOS settings. You have to look for the virtualization option in the BIOS and enable it.
